Hi Everyone,
Things are pumping up for the new academic year and we are working toward making 2009 better than ever for GLP students. February will see the arrival of lots of new GLPers and I would like to enlist YOUR help to welcome the new comers to the GLP community.
There will be an information session just for new GLP students held during Orientation week (23-27th Feb) and I would really appreciate some input by continuing GLP students. If you are available for a short time (probably only a hour) on Friday the 27th of Feb and you would like to come to meet and greet some of the new recruits give me a call on 9214 4429 or send me an email to ncucinotta@swin.edu.au.
I'm look forward to a great 2009 for the Swinburne/Northeastern Global Leaders.
Warm Regards

Hi all strategic leaders, I have just received an email from Leslie in regards to the return of the final paper. Apparently, the subject, "Developing Strategic Leaders" had been taken down from the Swinburne blackboard. Therefore, who ever wished to have their paper return, you will have to send a request to Leslie directly at l.hitch@neu.edu. If not, I guess our final grade fo the subject will be out on the 13th Decemember 2008.
By the way, I had also posted a photo of the graduating group. Good luck to everyone on the future endeavour.
Regards, Cricket

How do we describe our program

Further to our class brief discussion, I have been wondering how to best describe the Masters of Science in Leadership program and the Global Leadership Program?
This would be for resumes and cover letters when we are applying for jobs and graduate positions.
The Northeastern site describes the Masters of Science in Leadership as: "Northeastern's Master of Science in Leadership is designed to assist today's leaders and prepare emerging leaders in meeting these challenges."
In the one-liner I drafted I said: "The Masters in Leadership is a one of a kind program designed to provide skills in developing leadership within individuals and organisations at a global level."
So lets get some ideas out there about how to capture what we are studying and what makes it unique in particular the global aspect of it.
Thanks. Rick

Through a Global Leadership Program (GLP) we will develop a combination of professional skills, strategic thinking, innovative ideas, values , emotional energy and edge. GLP is also about leadership development. Leadership development is about teaching "Tomorrow's Leaders" how to come up with their own answers to whatever challanges and opportunities arise.

Hi to all GLP members, Charles and I had been discussing on the permission issues in regards to this website. However, since this is a place for all members, we will like to get some suggestions and feedbacks on the members the privacy of the information posted. Thus far, this is the update:
1. We cannot limit section of the web pages to be private. 2. We can turn this wiki to be invitation only site. 3. There is suggestion to create a "Guest" profile for prospective students if this web page is an invitation based site only.
Please give some thoughts about it and get back to us.
Regards, Johnson

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with other wiki members. Currently, as far as I know, we would be upgrading the website by invitation only. However, due to the limitation of the wiki, we can't allow visitors to view some of the information only as it is a feature to be upgraded by the wiki administrator. So hopefully, such feature will be made available for us.
In regards to the graduate to be acting as mentors, I had already created a page for volunteers to be mentors. Within that categories, I had also included a page for adminstrators to input their contact details. It is under "Contacts" weblink. Let me know if any one of you needed assistance in updating your contacrs profile.

QUESTIONS from leader of the future-fast company article

The author with regards to distinguishing role from self on our own advises of our need for two different kinds of partners who can help us stay analytical: 1. Allies inside the organization-people who share our agenda 2. Confidants (inside or outside the organization)- people who can keep us from getting lost in our role
My question is: How do we find these partners and how realistic is this in the business world? As far as my understanding is concerned, I think our colleagues/partners do not have time to solve our problems and to keep us from getting lost, let alone solving their own problems.
Any comments / suggestions/ feedback / solutions would be highly appreciated.

Finding an internal confidant is a difficult thing to do in an organisation. In terms of finding allies I think that is easier.
I have found in my experience a Confidant in the workplace develops over time, through trust and respect, possibly through a coaching relationship.
We have a valuable asset in terms of each other (fellow students) to ask questions of which has a huge value.

Why is patience an important part of leadership and especially for strategic leadership? Do great leaders automatically emerge when there are turbulent times? If so, why? If not, why not? Discuss your thoughts on developing a shared vision versus strategic thinking.

A basic difference between both is that, shared vision is something that is shared by the organisation while strategic thinking is a tool which will help achieve the vision.

Class related recommendations from Sid, Joe, Gagan and Quan.
1. More experiential activities
•Lecturer creating an atmosphere in the class where students can learn from their peers and from the learning atmosphere created.
•Good mix of readings, case studies and videos in the class.
2. More engagement from students
•Teams to present for 10-15 minutes on the readings for the class, preferably one team in each class.
3. Team formation
•Random selection of teams which would ensure students can learn from their peers from other cultures as there is a tendency for students to form groups with members of similar background and culture.
•Random seating arrangement in every class.
4. Team assessment component
•Team assessment made part of grading, which would invoke members to contribute to their best potential to the team.
•Team feedback from members and lecturers every 2-3 weeks.
Stake Holders: Primary: Lecturers Secondary: Students
Regards, Sid
P.S: Anyone who has other suggestions, please feel free to add to it.

RE: Recommendations: Class Related - Team formation

i think, random team will be good for the students to practice the team work because in the real organization, sometimes we can not choose people who want to work with. In this circumstance, i think we will get more useful experience in this leadership classes then apply it to the real organization/real work in the future rather than just get the high grade.
